The VitalStim® Therapy System is a unique tool we utilize at Balance and Mobility Therapy to enhance our treatment of individuals experiencing dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing. This specialized technology uses Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) to aid the re-education of the muscles involved in swallowing.
VitalStim® delivers gentle, controlled electrical currents, which, combined with traditional swallowing exercises, help strengthen and coordinate the muscles needed for swallowing. This innovative approach is effective in treating dysphagia resulting from various conditions such as stroke, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and other neurological disorders.
One notable feature of VitalStim® is its biofeedback capability using sEMG. This enables patients to monitor their swallowing strength visually, making therapy more interactive and aiding the muscle relearning process.
