Tendonitis - is an inflammation or irritation of a tendon, which is a thick cordlike tissue that connects a muscle to a bone. It is most often caused by repetitive movements, minor impact to the affected area, or a sudden and/or more serious trauma. Tendonitis can be related to poor posture at work or home during activity, muscle imbalances, muscle tightness, and muscle weakness. It can at times be attributed to poor body mechanics, inadequate stretching before activity, or drastic changes to regular sports/activity participation. Anyone can get tendonitis, but it is most common in adults, especially those over 40 years of age due to tendons becoming less elastic and tolerating less stress (making them more prone to tearing). Growing children are also susceptible to tendonitis as muscle & tendon growth/stretching does not always keep up with skeletal changes being experienced during the adolescent years. Symptoms of tendonitis include pain and inflammation at the site of the tendon and surrounding area. Treatment at BAM includes modalities (hot packs, cold packs, ultrasound and electrical stimulation to reduce pain & inflammation), exercises to restore strength and range of motion, and if necessary, bracing to protect the affected area.
