Stroke - A stroke occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery, or a blood vessel breaks interrupting blood flow to that area of the brain. This causes brain cell death which leads to the functions controlled by that area of the brain to be impaired or lost. Generally, stroke can cause five types of disabilities: paralysis or problems controlling movement; sensory disturbances including pain; problems using or understanding language; problems with thinking and memory; and emotional disturbances. Stroke rehabilitation can help survivors relearn skills that were lost by the part of the brain that was damaged. Physical therapy helps survivors regain the use of stroke-impaired limbs, teach compensatory strategies to reduce the effect of remaining deficits, and establish ongoing exercise programs to help people retain their newly learned skills.
