Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson’s Disease - A progressive disease of the nervous system marked by, muscular rigidity, and slow imprecise movement, chiefly affecting middle-aged and elderly people. It is associated with the degeneration of the basal ganglia of the brain and the deficiency of the neurotransmitter dopamine. There are 50,000 – 60,000 new cases of PD each year in the USA. The primary motor characteristics of PD are resting tremor, rigidity, postural instability, bradykinesia (slowness of movement) and hypokinesia (reduced amplitude of movement).

Balance and Mobility Therapy provides a specialized therapy for patients with Parkinson’s Disease called LSVT BIG. The goal of the BIG program is to get patients to engage in high amplitude exercises to achieve the largest range of motion that can be preformed with the highest effort with the most maximally efficient biomechanics every trial every day. This is different from other rehab techniques in that it retrains normal use of the limbs to be BIG, it requires intensive practice (4 times a week for 4 weeks), it utilizes repetition to allow for the pt to carry over these movements outside of the therapy environment and the patient receives feedback and motivation from the hour long one on one treatment sessions.
